Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos TenerifeLos Cristianos Tenerife is one of the oldest and most successful Canary Island resorts.  Such is it's popularity that it continues to expand into the surrounding foothills.  As a port it is also busy and thriving, it is the centre for the local fishing fleet and also the place to catch ferries to La Gomera and El Hierro.   All manner of boats and fishing trips are on offer here, some will take you to photograph whales and schools of dolphins, whilst others offer sightseeing cruises up the coast to Los Gigantes and Masca.

Los Cristianos old town is a short walk up from the port.  This centre is largely pedestrianised and presents a stark contrast with recent development as it is full of characterful narrow streets and alleyways.  For those seeking a real shopping bargain this might be found at the Sunday market in Los Cristianos by the Arona Hotel, be prepared to haggle!  A long promenade connects the old beach of Los Cristianos (see picture to left) with the newer Playa de las Vistas (see picture to right).  This is well worth strolling along at night to be entertained by the live music coming from many restaurants and bars.  In the most popular areas you may catch caricature artists sketching their customers for a small fee, usually 10 euros.  There are a large number of different themed bars, many of which offer familiar brands from home, along with karaoke.  Both beaches are clean and fly flags to advise on the safety of swimming, in addition there are life-guards.  It is possible to rent sun beds and parasols by the day and also shower off sand before quitting the beach.

The town is close to many of the more notable attractions including the Park Exoticos and the Jardin del Atlantico.  This last explains the unique water supply in Tenerife and the local banana growing methods.

The central plaza features a lovely church and is the focus of Canarian festivals and social activities in the evening.  On or near the square most of the main Spanish banks are represented, as well as a Barclays.  There are also a great abundance of clothes shops and boutiques.  The clothes here are very stylish.  Our apartment is less than 10 minutes walk from the centre.

If you choose to head for the night clubs and exotic entertainment of Las Americas, then you will need to walk in the direction of the large hot air balloon which ascends daily in order to give a bird's eye view of Playa de las Americas.  Las Americas is 10 minutes walk from Ocean Azahara Playa and features the more expensive restaurants and clubs such as Jazzissimo, many of which stay open until the small hours.
